What’s with the hummingbird?

That’s a question I’ve been getting since the debut of my new logo. When I started working on the logo, I spent a lot of time in my garden. It was springtime and the birds were singing, the butterflies were fluttering and the air smelled of blossoming star jasmine. Capturing this feeling of spring really became important to me. Forming my own photography business has been a process of renewal, of blossoming. As I worked on my vision board, two images began surfacing over and over again. Hummingbirds and butterflies. I have always loved butterflies.. but what’s with the hummingbird all of a sudden?

Well, 2 summers ago, I was at my neighbor’s house and a hummingbird had flown through the open sliding glass door and was stuck. It frantically tried to escape, but it kept banging against the window above the sliding door. Finally, exhausted, the little bird collapsed. I held that little bird in my hands, while my neighbor made a bowl of sugar water. We took the hummingbird outside and placed it’s beak in the bowl of sugar water. It slowly started to drink.. then it started slurping faster and faster. All of a sudden it lifted it’s little head and looked around, eyes open wide. Then it sprung from my hands and flew off. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Since then, I’ve noticed hummingbirds more than I’ve ever noticed them before. When they buzz through my garden, I always say hello.. (I know, I’m a goofball). Well, this spring the hummingbirds have been visiting me daily. Bathing in my water fountain, feeding from my lavender bushes, and always close enough to really enjoy. It became clear to me that the hummingbird needs to be a part of my new brand.

So, there you go… the story of the humming bird. :)

ps. recently my bff, Dawn shared this quote with me.. and I think it perfectly describes everything I’ve been trying to say:

“legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. the hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.”
